A successful print marketing campaign can be tricky to pull off; in his best-selling book It's Not How Good You Are, It's How Good You Want to Be, writer Paul Arden states: "Print advertising should be recognisable at a hundred paces, and it should be obvious who it's an ad for without seeing the brand name." You might think it little harm to let your kids play games on your iPad from time to time, but there is one particular and easy-to-overlook danger: that they could be a little too tempted by the in-app purchases dangled in front of their noses and basically empty your bank account. Hence why old-fashioned toys like Play-Doh could still have a place, as the company itself has emphasised in a wonderful print ad cited by Creative Bloq. It basically just consists of Play-Doh models of a trolley icon, the Play-Doh logo, and the slogan "No in-app purchases". Simple, but gets its message across brilliantly.
When the literary icons William Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde and Mark Twain were writing their masterpieces, they couldn't have imagined for a second that, one day, advertising would depict them acting as headphones – a very modern invention. However, that's exactly how they appeared in a print campaign used by Penguin Books last year to promote its Audiobooks. The campaign, devised by McCann Worldgroup India, won a Gold Press Lion at Cannes International Festival of Creativity.
Last year, Apple launched the latest version of its media hub for the living room, the Apple TV – and spread the word with a number of billboard advertisements. Those advertisements prominently used backgrounds seemingly playing on the well-known SMPTE "colour bars" pattern long used in TV calibration. However, some particularly observant people might have noticed that the colours are actually those of the Apple logo used between 1977 and 1999, as pointed out by Business Insider.
The Internet seems to have rather an obsession with cats – and it turns out that, like the Ancient Egyptians, we like to have cats pictured on our physical walls, too. A print campaign developed by Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO for Whiskas shows a typical domestic cat living like a big cat in the wild – by, for example, chasing a gazelle or bonding with a fully grown male lion.
A brand doesn’t become as iconic as McDonald’s without good advertising – and, true to form, the burger corporation has caught attention yet again with a recent print ad showing the familiar box of fries, complete with that ‘M’ logo on the front… except that the box itself is carved from potato, obviously the ingredient from which the chips are made. This campaign was the work of TBWA Shanghai, who we reckon have earned themselves a tasty trip to McDonald’s. Do you want fries with that?
